What is a managed IT services provider (MSP)? How do they differ from “break-fix” providers?

An MSP is a third-party company that provides partially or fully outsourced IT support, strategy, and cybersecurity services. The MSP’s role may be the client’s entire IT department, or they may augment the client’s in-house IT resources.

MSP vs. break-fix: MSPs apply proactive maintenance and management policies and monitor your IT environment for security gaps or performance issues. In contrast, break-fix providers typically respond to problems after they get noticed by customers or staff. MSP services are usually more expensive but bring substantially less risk.
